A 32-year-old doctor from Mumbai’s Sir JJ Hospital allegedly jumped off the Sewri-Nhava Sheva sea link, Atal Setu, on Monday night, minutes after telling his mother he was coming home for dinner, Navi Mumbai police said on Tuesday. As of Tuesday, the doctor remains untraceable.

Identified as Dr Omkar Kavitake, a resident of Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai, the doctor was reportedly seen by a motorist stopping his Honda Amaze on the Mumbai-bound side of the bridge and climbing over the railing. The witness immediately alerted the police control room.

Officers from Navi Mumbai’s Ulwa police station rushed to the spot and found Dr Kavitake’s car parked on the sea link. An iPhone recovered from inside the vehicle helped authorities confirm his identity. He had been working at JJ Hospital for the past six years.

“We checked the phone and saw that the last outgoing call was at 9:11 pm to his mother. He told her he was coming home for dinner,” said Senior Inspector Arjun Rajane.

A search operation involving local police, divers, and emergency services was launched late Monday night and continued through Tuesday, but no trace of the doctor has been found yet.

Police are questioning family members, friends, and colleagues to determine the motive behind the suspected suicide. The investigation is ongoing.
