Gurgaon police have arrested a technician employed at Medanta Hospital in connection with the alleged rape of a female patient. According to police officials, the survivor—a private airline employee—was admitted to the hospital earlier this month and placed on a ventilator when the alleged assault occurred.
The accused, identified as 25-year-old Deepak, hails from Badhauli village in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district. He was apprehended on Thursday following an intensive investigation.
The incident came to light on April 14, when the woman filed a complaint at Sadar Police Station, describing the traumatic experience in detail.
Special Investigation Team Formed
Given the seriousness of the case, Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to identify and arrest the accused. The SIT, led by DCP (HQ) Dr. Arpit Jain, consisted of eight specialized teams tasked with gathering evidence and questioning staff.
As part of the probe, investigators reviewed footage from over 800 CCTV cameras installed throughout the hospital and conducted extensive interviews with employees. Senior officers leading the investigation included ACP Sadar Yashwant, ACP CAW Dr. Kavita, SHO Sadar Inspector Sunil Kumar, SHO Women’s Police Station (West) Inspector Geeta, CIA Sector-40 In-Charge Inspector Amit Kumar, and ASI Sonika from Sadar Police Station.
What happened?
Preliminary findings indicate that the accused had been working as an ICU equipment technician at Medanta Hospital for approximately five months.
According to the FIR, the woman was in Gurgaon for professional training and was staying at a hotel when she fell ill after nearly drowning in a swimming pool. She was initially admitted to a hospital and later shifted to Medanta by her husband on April 5 for advanced treatment.
On April 6, while the woman was on a ventilator, she alleges that a hospital staff member sexually assaulted her. Though semi-conscious and unable to speak at the time, she later informed her husband about the incident after being discharged on April 13. The couple then approached the police to report the crime.
The Gurgaon Police have booked the accused under Sections 68 and 64(2)(e) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertain to sexual assault by hospital staff. Further legal proceedings are underway, and the accused is scheduled to be produced in court on April 19.
“We have been made aware of a complaint from a patient and have been fully cooperating with the investigations conducted by the relevant authorities. At this stage, no allegations have been substantiated, and all relevant documents, including CCTV footage from the hospital for the time period in question, have been handed over to the police. We remain committed to supporting the process of investigation,” said Dr Sanjay Durani, Medical Superintendent at Medanta had said in a statement.
