Seven people were killed and three others were seriously injured in a collision between two vehicles on the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, also known as the Samruddhi Expressway, in Jalna district of Maharashtra. The incident occurred around 11 pm on Friday near Kadvanchi village.

According to police officials, the accident involved a multi-utility vehicle (MUV) travelling from Nagpur to Mumbai and a car heading in the opposite direction. As a result of the collision six people died on the spot, while another person succumbed to injuries at a hospital later.

The impact of the crash was severe enough to cause the MUV to breach the crash barrier and overturn off the road’s left side. Local villagers and police responded swiftly to rescue those trapped in the wreckage.

Dr Umesh Jadhav, a medical officer at the Government District Hospital in Jalna, said six bodies were brought to the hospital for post-mortem. Three injured persons are being treated here, while one critically injured person who was shifted to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district died later.

While three victims were from Mumbai, others were from Buldhana district. One injured person’s identity remains unknown, he said. The three injured persons are from Mumbai.

The Samruddhi Highway, a six-lane expressway spanning 701 kilometres, connects Mumbai and Nagpur, with the first phase inaugurated in December 2022.
