LS polls: The penultimate phase of Lok Sabha elections in 58 constituencies across six states and two Union territories, including all the seven seats in Delhi will vote on Saturday. Polling for the sixth out of the seven phases will take place in 14 seats in Uttar Pradesh, all 10 seats of Haryana, eight seats each in Bihar and West Bengal, six seats in Odisha, four seats in Jharkhand and one seat in Jammu and Kashmir. Polling in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag-Rajouri, which was adjourned in Phase 3, will also be held during this phase. Simultaneously, 42 Assembly constituencies will also vote today. Voting begins at 7 am and conclude at 6 pm. Till now, voting has been completed in 25 states and Union territories and 428 constituencies out of 543.

As many as 889 candidates are in the fray from the 58 Lok Sabha Parliamentary Constituencies. The high-decibel campaigning for the sixth phase ended on May 23. Among the key candidates in fray in the sixth phase are: BJP candidate Manoj Tiwari and Congress candidate Kanhaiya Kumar who are contesting from North East Delhi, Maneka Gandhi from Sultanpur, PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti, BJP’s Abhijit Gangopadhyay, Naveen Jindal and Rao Inderjit Singh, as well as BJP candidate from Sambalpur Dharmenda Pradhan, BJP’s Sambit Patra, Congress’ Raj Babbar, among others.

Following the conclusion of the sixth phase of polls, the last and final phase of elections will take place on June 1. Results will be declared on June 4.

Voter turnout in previous phases

The first two phases of elections took place on April 19 and April 26, covering 102 and 89 constituencies respectively, with a voter participation of 66.14 per cent and 66.71 per cent, according to the Election Commission of India. The third phase, covering 94 constituencies, took place on May 7, recording a turnout of 65.68 per cent. On May 13, the fourth phase took place across 96 constituencies, witnessing a final turnout of 69.16 per cent. The fifth phase, held on May 20 for 49 constituencies across six states and two Union Territories, concluded with a participation rate of 62.2 per cent.
