In the aftermath of the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, a case which has engulfed the entire nation, the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s hostel has seen a drop in the number of women living there. The Indian Express has reported. The exodus started on August 9, immediately after the junior doctor’s body was discovered in the institution’s seminar room.
A 24-year-old fourth-year MBBS student at the hospital said, “We are just 17 women in our hostel now. It used to house 160 junior women doctors belonging to different courses before August 9.”
The junior doctors have revealed that almost all the hostels at the medical college are now deserted other than nursing hostel.
The RG Kar hospital campus houses five hostels for female doctors and students.
The MBBS student revealed that post August 9, students started leaving the campus, adding some did return after a few days. However, due to the attack by miscreants on the hospital on the night of August 14, more students left.
“We were so scared that night, we can’t explain it,” another second year MBBS student said. Many female nurses and doctors who came to protest sought refuge in the hostel when the mob attacked.
Some of the female junior doctors who stayed behind mentioned that their parents want them to come back home.
Earlier, during a Supreme Court hearing, Senior Advocate Aparajita Singh informed that out of 700 resident doctors, only 30-40 women doctors and 60-70 men doctors were staying on the campus post August 14.
