As the investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata continues, Durga Devi, the mother-in-law of the accused Sanjoy Roy, has claimed that there is a possibility of other individuals being involved in the crime. She believes Roy could not have acted alone. In an interview with ANI on Monday, Durga Devi described a strained relationship with Roy. She recounted an incident where Roy physically assaulted her daughter, leading to a police complaint. “My relations with him were very tense,” she said.
Devi further added that while things were initially fine for the first six months, he caused a miscarriage when her daughter was three months pregnant and continued to abuse her. She said she had to cover her medical expenses due to her ongoing illness. “Sanjoy was not good. Hang him or do whatever you want with him. I won’t speak about the crime. He could not have done it alone. He can’t do it alone,” she said.
The brutal murder and rape of the trainee doctor have ignited widespread protests and demands for justice across multiple cities. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu notice of the case, with a hearing scheduled on August 20, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been reportedly authorized to conduct a polygraph test on the detained suspect. On August 18, the CBI team performed 3D laser mapping in the emergency ward of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as part of their investigation.
Additionally, the West Bengal government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into allegations of financial misconduct at RG Kar Hospital from January 2021 to the present. The SIT, led by IG Pranav Kumar and supported by DIGs Waquar Reza, Soma Das Mitra, and Kolkata DC Indira Mukherjee, has been granted full access to necessary documents and is tasked with submitting an initial report within a month. The deceased postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
