In a swift breakthrough, the Jammu police arrested a man accused of murdering an elderly couple in their residence at Patta Chungi Udheywala on the city’s outskirts. The arrest comes just four days after the brutal crime that shocked the local community, reported PTI.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Joginder Singh identified the accused as Deepak Singh, alias “Sonu,” a longtime acquaintance of the victims. Singh had known the couple, Sanjay Chandaill, a retired principal, and his wife Veena Devi, for nearly eight years and had occasionally helped them with household chores.
The SSP revealed that Sonu, a resident of Talab Tillo, was facing financial difficulties, which allegedly led him to plan the murders with the intent of robbery. On September 14, the couple was found dead in their home after being brutally murdered.
The investigation uncovered that the couple had been living alone since their two daughters moved out of Jammu and Kashmir earlier this year. SSP Singh stated that Sonu had fled his home on September 3, prompting his wife to file a missing person’s report six days later. Sonu returned on September 12, forcibly taking Rs 5,000 from his wife before leaving again to carry out the crime.
Authorities say CCTV footage played a crucial role in identifying and capturing the suspect. SSP Singh urged residents to install cameras covering main roads to assist in future investigations.
The police confirmed that Sonu acted alone in the crime and had no prior criminal record.
