As Iran launched its first-ever direct attack on Israel, India has called for an “immediate de-escalation”.
The Ministry of External Affairs, in a statement on Sunday said, “We are seriously concerned at the escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran which threatens the peace and security in the region.”
“We call for immediate de-escalation, exercise of restraint, stepping back from violence and return to the path of diplomacy. It is vital that security and stability are maintained in the region,” it said.
“We are closely monitoring the evolving situation. Our Embassies in the region are in close touch with Indian community,” the MEA said.
OAir raid sirens blared across Israel on Sunday as Iran unleashed a barrage of hundreds of drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles. The attack is viewed as retaliation for a suspected Israeli strike in Syria on April 2, which resulted in the deaths of two Iranian generals inside an Iranian consular building.
The United States has pledged its support to Israel, with President Joe Biden stating that American forces have assisted Israel in intercepting “nearly all” of the drones and missiles.
