Independence Day, 15 August 2024: India is all set to celebrate its Independence Day on August 15, 2024 but do you know if this is the 77th or the 78th Independence Day? Well, this year the nation will observe its 78th Independence Day. The 78th I-Day celebrations have ‘Viksit Bharat’ as its theme, which fits with the government’s goal of making the nation a developed one by 2047.

As the country is getting ready for this occasion, the enthusiasm both domestically and internationally among its Indian population is commendable. It acts as a reminder of the struggles we underwent for almost two centuries before being released from British colonial rule, as well as the sacrifices made by leaders and freedom fighters who gave their lives to secure India’s independence.

After over 200 years, British colonial rule in India came to an end on August 15, 1947. August 15 has been observed as India’s Independence Day ever since that momentous day. August 15, 1948, was the day the country celebrated its first anniversary of independence. Therefore, India’s 77th anniversary of independence will occur in 2024. Alternatively, if we start in 1947 and work our way backward, August 15, 2024, will mark the 78th anniversary of this event.

Thus, it is correct to state that on August 15, 2024, India would commemorate its 78th Independence Day.

In the days preceding the Independence Day festivities, Delhi’s Red Fort assumes a central role. Jawaharlal Nehru, the former Indian prime minister, delivered his renowned Tryst With Destiny speech from the walls of this recognisable fort. After that, it has become customary to do so.
