The Indian Meteorological Department recorded the hottest day in Delhi on Wednesday, when the mercury soared to 39.1 degrees Celsius in the national capital, marking the highest maximum temperature recorded so far this year.

According to IMD data, the second-highest maximum temperature was observed on March 9 at 38 degrees Celsius.

The capital experienced a significant departure from the season’s average, with Wednesday’s maximum temperature being four notches above normal. Conversely, the minimum temperature stood at 17 degrees Celsius, marking three notches below the season’s average, according to the data.

Forecasts suggest that temperatures are anticipated to climb close to 40 degrees Celsius this week. However, there’s relief in sight as Delhi may receive rainfall on April 13 and 14, accompanied by thunderstorms, stated Kuldeep Srivastava, scientist and head of the Regional Meteorological Centre.

Looking ahead, the weather office predicts a partly cloudy sky for Thursday, with expected maximum and minimum temperatures of 39 and 19 degrees Celsius, respectively.
