Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the women’s quota bill during the first day of the proceedings at the new Parliament building on Tuesday. The Prime Minister, while introducing the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’, asked the consensus among all the lawmakers. He also said that the God has chosen him for the women’s quota bill. Taking a swipe at the past governments, PM Modi said that previous regimes were not able to pass the reservation bill. The quota bill will ensure 33 per cent reservation for women politicians in Parliament and legislative Assemblies.
While talking about the bill during the second phase of the Special Session of Parliament, PM Modi said that several attempts were made to introduce the women’s quota bill. He said that Atal Bihari Vajpayee government presented the Bill in Parlaiment many times but due to lack of numbers, it never managed to get it passed. “God has given me this opportunity to take this forward,” PM Modi said while presenting the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
The Union Cabinet approved the constitution amendment bill to provide reservations for women in Parliament and state assemblies under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The approval of the women’s reservation bill paves a way for introducing the historic bill in the ongoing special session of Parliament, according to officials.
If the bill is passed by a two-thirds majority in both the Parliamentary houses, the bill would require an amendment to the Indian Constitution and can become a law.
