Amid a spike in Covid-19 cases across Southeast Asia, Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Friday directed all districts in the state to intensify surveillance efforts. The minister made the appeal during a high-level review meeting with district medical and surveillance officers.
In her address, George emphasized the need for health officials to remain alert and act swiftly to detect and contain any rise in infections. “Early reporting and self-care are vital in preventing the spread of the virus,” she said.
According to government data, Kerala reported 273 Covid-19 cases in May. The highest number of infections was recorded in Kottayam (82), followed by Thiruvananthapuram (73), Ernakulam (49), Pathanamthitta (30), and Thrissur (26).
George urged people with symptoms like cough, sore throat, or breathing issues to wear masks and practice caution. Special advice was given to high-risk groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic health issues, recommending mask usage in public spaces and during travel.
“Masks continue to be mandatory in hospitals, and all health workers must adhere to this rule,” George added. She also appealed to the general public to avoid non-essential visits to healthcare facilities to prevent unnecessary exposure.
The minister’s directive comes as a preventive measure amid growing regional concerns, aiming to keep Kerala’s Covid-19 numbers under control through proactive surveillance and public cooperation.
