Amid growing speculations about an alliance between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a swipe at the opposition. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala accused the INDI alliance of lacking a clear mission and vision, while pointing out the contradictory relationships between these parties in different states.
Poonawala remarked, “The INDI alliance operates without a clear mission, driven by confusion and self-interest. Their main goal seems to be protecting their corruption and forming opportunistic alliances.” He highlighted the inconsistent alliances between AAP and Congress, stating that in Punjab, they are rivals, while in Delhi, they previously worked together. In Haryana, the relationship remains uncertain, with shifting signals on collaboration.
He further noted, “In Haryana, sometimes it’s a yes, sometimes a no. The Congress even admitted a former AAP member, Rajendra Pal Gautam, despite previously criticizing him. This shows the desperation of these political forces.”
This statement comes in response to recent announcements by AAP MP Raghav Chaddha, who revealed that discussions with Congress are ongoing to form an alliance for the Haryana elections. Chaddha mentioned that talks are aimed at forming a coalition “in the national interest” and for the benefit of the state.
Congress, too, has confirmed the discussions, with Deepak Babaria, AICC in-charge of Haryana, noting that several parties within the INDI bloc, including the Communist Party of India (CPI-M) and Samajwadi Party, have approached them for a united front.
The Haryana Assembly elections, set for October 5, will decide the fate of the 90-member legislative assembly. The nomination filing deadline is September 12, with votes to be counted on October 8.
