Banwarilal Purohit on Saturday resigned as Punjab Governor citing “personal reasons and certain other commitments”.

In his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, he said, “Due to my personal reasons and certain other commitments, I tender my resignation from the post of the Governor of Punjab and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh. Please accept the same and oblige.”

He had been holding the office since August 2021. His resignation comes a day after he met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi.

A three-time MP from Nagpur, Purohit served as the Governor of Tamil Nadu in 2016 and was appointed as the Governor of Assam in 2017.

Purohit and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann have been engaged in a war of words for some time now, with the former even threatening to recommend President’s Rule in the state, if his letters to the CM over the drugs issue in the state remained unanswered.
