Ending the suspense, the Election Commission of India on Monday announced the dates of the five state polls. While announcing the schedule, the EC also gave information about its new innovative cVIGIL app. Voters can now become the eyes and ears for the Election Commission department to successfully conduct elections in the area through a user-friendly app, cVIGIL. The Election Commission of India has introduced an app for Android and iOS that allows voters in India to address issues within 100 minutes.

Elections ensure democracy in a country; therefore, it becomes crucial to conduct free and fair elections. However, elections can take an ugly turn, making it difficult for voters. The ECI has come up with a solution by introducing the cVIGIL app.
The app is available on the Play Store and App Store, and it just requires three things to function: a camera, GPS, and an internet connection. According to an article by ECI, through cVIGIL, citizens can report any incident that violates the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by capturing a 2-minute or less video via phone and uploading it on the app with a small description along with the video.

The single complaint will connect the District Control Room, Returning Officer, and Field Unit (Flying Squads)/Static Surveillance Teams for a fast-track solution. The video or image will be used as evidence for time-bound action by the flying squads. To ensure the safety of citizens, the complaint will be sent anonymously if the citizen wants.
Then, the cVIGIL app will read the geographical location of the image or video when it was shot and take action accordingly. The ECI has guaranteed a response within 100 minutes of the complaint being uploaded to the app.

Here are the steps to follow as a vigilant and active citizen to report on cVIGIL:

  • Step 1: Download the cVIGIL app on your smartphone via the App Store or Play Store.
  • Step 2: Fill in the required information on the app.
  • Step 3: To file a complaint, the user has to record a video or shoot a photo and upload it to the app.
  • Step 4: The app will read an automated location map from the Geographic Information System.
  • Step 5: The complaint will alert the district control room, and a field unit will be assigned.
  • Step 6: If the complaint is proved true, the information will be sent to the National Grievance Portal of the Election Commission of India for further action, and the citizen will be notified.
