In the wake of four militant attacks over the past three days in Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted a comprehensive review of the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. The meeting, attended by National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and other senior officials, focused on assessing the recent upsurge in violence in the region, The Indian Express reports.
Detailed briefing and counter-terror measures
Prime Minister Modi received an extensive briefing on the current security landscape in Jammu and Kashmir. He was updated on the ongoing counter-terrorism measures being implemented to tackle the recent surge in terrorist activities. Emphasizing the need for a robust response, Modi highlighted the importance of deploying the full spectrum of India’s counter-terror capabilities.
In addition to the high-level security meeting, PM Modi held discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Their conversation centered on the deployment of security forces and the progress of counter-terror operations in the region. Modi also engaged with Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to get a ground-level perspective and was briefed on the efforts being undertaken by the local administration to restore normalcy.
Recent surge in terror attacks
The review meeting comes in the wake of a series of terror attacks that have rocked Jammu and Kashmir over the past few days. Notable incidents include the Reasi terror attack, the Kathua terror attack, and the Doda terror attack, which have collectively heightened security concerns.
On June 9, terrorists targeted a bus in Reasi, causing it to plunge into a gorge. The attack resulted in the tragic deaths of at least nine pilgrims and left 42 others injured. This incident has been particularly alarming, given the number of civilian casualties involved.
In another recent incident, a constable from the Special Operations Group (SOG) was injured during an encounter in Doda district, as confirmed by the Jammu and Kashmir police. This attack, along with others in Kathua, underscores the persistent threat posed by terrorist elements in the region.
