RTX, a leader in aerospace and defence technologies, is gearing up for future growth in India, focusing on deepening its involvement with the Indian armed forces. Over seven decades of partnership have seen RTX supply crucial systems and platforms for India’s armed forces.
In conversation with FinancialExpress.com on the sidelines of the ongoing Aero India 2025, Ashmita Sethi, President & Country Head at Pratt & Whitney, India, a part of RTX, provided insight into the company’ long-standing contributions and its ambitious plans for the future.
According to her the company’s history with the Indian armed forces is extensive, spanning across various platforms. Collins Aerospace, a key division of RTX, has contributed to most Western transport aircraft in service today, as well as indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1. Additionally, key military transport platforms such as the C-17, C-295, C-130J, P-8I, and more have benefited from RTX’s products.
“RTX has been supplying products across a variety of platforms, including fighter jets and transport aircraft, and continues to provide cutting-edge technologies like precision munitions and integrated air defence systems,” said Sethi.
Focusing on Next-Gen Fighter Platforms
RTX is at the forefront of the development of the next-generation fighters in India, such as the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). Through its divisions, RTX can provide a suite of solutions for AMCA, including propulsion, avionics, aerostructures, and power systems. Sethi noted that Pratt & Whitney’s F100 engine, a 4th-generation engine with 5th-generation technologies, is especially suited to power these future fighters.
“Our role in the AMCA program is crucial, as we bring in not only advanced propulsion but also other systems and capabilities that will ensure the aircraft meets India’s future defence needs,” she explained.
Transport and Helicopter Segments
As India looks to enhance its capabilities in transport and helicopter segments, RTX is exploring collaborations on programs like the Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) and the Indian Multi Role Helicopter (IMRH). Collins Aerospace has a proven track record in providing systems for platforms like the C-390, a contender for the MTA program, and several rotary-wing aircraft used by the Indian Armed Forces.
Sethi highlighted, “Collins Aerospace’s expertise in delivering critical systems for helicopters, including the AH-64 Apache and CH-47 Chinook, positions us as a key player in the development of IMRH program. We aim to collaborate on providing off-the-shelf or co-developed solutions to expedite its progress.”
Local Collaboration
Pratt & Whitney and Collins Aerospace have already invested significantly in India, with Collins’s $200 million investment in manufacturing and Pratt & Whitney’s $40 million for engineering and aftermarket centers.
Sethi emphasized, “We are actively pursuing Make-in-India opportunities, particularly in support of indigenous programs like AMCA and IMRH. Our goal is to collaborate with local industry to ensure the success of these programs, including offering comprehensive MRO support to sustain them.”
RTX is also in regular touch Ministry of Defence to explore co-production and research partnerships that benefit the local defence industry.
Sustainment and Mission-Readiness
Mission readiness is a critical focus for RTX, particularly through its aftermarket services. According to Sethi the company has been supporting India’s existing fleet of fighter jets, transport, and helicopter platforms, ensuring operational availability and mission success. Sethi pointed out that Collins Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney are not only supporting legacy platforms like the Jaguar and Mirage 2000, but also ensuring the availability of spare parts and services for platforms such as the C-17 and C-295.
“Collins Aerospace is partnering with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to enhance MRO capabilities for the Indian Armed Forces. We provide 24/7 support globally and aim to strengthen India’s defence readiness through advanced sustainment solutions,” Sethi said.
Strengthening RTX’s Role in the Ecosystem
About the future plans, Sethi said that RTX’s focus remains on enhancing the defence capabilities of India, through both technological advancements and strategic local collaborations. From next-generation fighter platforms to transport and helicopter programs, RTX is committed to being a key partner in India’s defence modernization journey.
Sethi concluded, “Our vision is to continue our longstanding partnership with the Indian armed forces, contribute to India’s defence self-sufficiency, and play a pivotal role in ensuring the operational readiness of the nation’s defence assets.”
