An average hike of 5% in the toll tax has been announced by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) across the country, which will come into effect from today, June 3.
These revised toll rates were initially scheduled for April 1. However, it was deferred due to the Lok Sabha elections this year.
A senior NHAI official said, “The new user fee will come into effect from 3.6.2024.”
Why are the toll rates being hiked?
The adjustment in toll fees is part of an annual process to revise rates in accordance with changes in CPI-based inflation.
Approximately 855 user fee plazas are present on the national highway network, where tolls are collected according to the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008. Out of these, around 675 are public-funded, while 180 are operated by concessionaires.
