Stepping up security, the Delhi Traffic Police has deployed specialised teams across major road intersections to crack down on drunk driving and red-light violations during the Holi celebrations.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi Traffic), Prashant Gautam informed that elaborate measures are being taken to ensure a safe and peaceful celebration of the festival of colors.
In the New Delhi range, approximately 400 traffic police personnel have been deployed at 61 traffic points, along with about 40 joint pickets with local police. Our focus will be on enforcing traffic regulations, particularly targeting drunk driving, triple riding, lack of helmets, and seat belt violations, Gautam stated.
Public advisory for security measures
An advisory issued by the traffic police outlined strict monitoring of road rules violations, including overspeeding, triple riding, and erratic driving patterns.
Further, specialised inspection teams are being stationed at major intersections, gathering spots, and vulnerable areas during Holi celebrations to identify and penalise traffic violators.
“These special traffic police checking teams will be stationed on various roads and strategic locations/intersections all over Delhi, along with PCR vans and local police teams, to check drunken driving, red-light jumping etc,” the advisory stated.
Referring to the directions of the Supreme Court committee on road safety, the traffic police advisory also highlighted the possibility of seizing driving licenses and imposing a three-month suspension for such offenses.
Furthermore, the traffic police urged the public not to engage in dangerous stunts on two-wheelers and encouraged celebrating Holi indoors rather than in public places or on roads.
Road route update
The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee’s celebration of Hola Mohalla on Monday is also anticipated to cause traffic disruptions, according to traffic police.
The festivities scheduled to take place from early morning until evening at Gurudwara Damdama Sahib near Humayun’s Tomb, were expected to draw a large number of devotees.
Given the event, heavy vehicular traffic was anticipated on routes such as Mathura Road, Bharat Scouts and Guides Marg, Neela Gumbad, Oberoi Flyover, under Lodhi Flyover, Zakir Hussain Marg, and Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, police advised.
Commuters heading to Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station from areas such as Dhaula Kuan, AIIMS, South Delhi, and New Delhi have been recommended to take the Ring Road via Moolchand Underpass to Ashram Chowk-Bhogal Flyover and then turn right at Rajdoot Traffic Signal.
Meanwhile, commuters can also proceed straight from Ashram Chowk through Ashram Elevated Road to reach Nizamuddin Railway Station from the Sarai Kale Khan side, the police advisory mentioned.
