Mumbai based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) marked a key milestone in India’s defence capabilities with the delivery of the sixth and final Scorpene-class submarine, INS Vaghsheer, to the Indian Navy.
This delivery on Jan 9, 2025, concludes Project P-75, a critical endeavour that has significantly enhanced India’s submarine fleet. The submarine, now ready for commissioning, has been through a rigorous testing and trial phase to ensure it meets the Navy’s combat-ready standards.
Background
INS Vaghsheer was launched in April 2022 and underwent extensive trials, testing its endurance, stealth features, and combat efficiency. “The delivery of INS Vaghsheer showcases India’s growing self-reliance in defence technology,” said Sanjeev Singhal, Chairman and Managing Director of MDL.
“This marks not just the completion of the Scorpene series but also the culmination of years of technological progress, positioning MDL as a leader in submarine construction.” With this achievement, India joins an exclusive group of nations capable of building advanced, modern submarines.
The Vaghsheer boasts advanced stealth technologies, including reduced radiated noise levels and sophisticated hydrodynamic design, making it one of the quietest submarines in the world. Its combat capabilities include the use of precision-guided weapons such as torpedoes and tube-launched anti-ship missiles, further solidifying its role in both offensive and defensive naval operations. It is designed for a wide range of missions, from anti-submarine warfare to intelligence gathering, and is fully capable of operating in diverse maritime environments.
What is onboard INS Vaghsheer
Notably, INS Vaghsheer includes several advancements over its predecessors, including indigenously developed systems like the air-conditioning plant, internal communication network, and the Ku-Band SATCOM system. These additions align with India’s broader defence strategy of reducing reliance on foreign technology and enhancing indigenous production capabilities.
Project 75 (I) & MDL
Looking ahead, MDL is setting its sights on Project 75 I, the Indian Navy’s ambitious plan to build six nuclear-powered attack submarines. Project 75 I represents the next frontier in India’s naval defence capabilities, and MDL is a strong contender for this high-profile contract. With its state-of-the-art facilities, capacity to build multiple vessels concurrently, and extensive experience with the Scorpene-class submarines, MDL is well-positioned to contribute to the Navy’s future needs.
About the Shipyard
The shipyard has already modernized its infrastructure to meet the growing demands of India’s maritime defence requirements. MDL now boasts the capability to construct up to 10 capital warships and 11 submarines simultaneously, a testament to its expanding role in India’s defence sector.
As India continues to strengthen its naval forces, the successful delivery of INS Vaghsheer serves as both a landmark achievement and a foundation for future submarine projects that will further bolster India’s strategic defence posture.
