Alstom, the renowned French multinational rolling stock manufacturer, announced the commencement of production for Metropolis trainsets designated for the fourth phase of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). This significant endeavor, awarded in November 2022, entails the delivery of 52 train sets, each composed of six cars, as detailed in the company’s official statement.

The project’s scope encompasses catering to three distinct lines within the DMRC network. These lines include extensions of the existing Line 7 and Line 8, along with the introduction of the new Gold Line 10, facilitating connectivity from Aerocity to Tughlakabad, covering a substantial distance of 64.67 kilometers.

“We have a longstanding association with the Delhi Metro, and it is a matter of pride for us to join India’s largest metro network in its continued growth and expansion” Olivier Loison Managing Director, Alstom India said. “Our Metropolis metros have a noteworthy track record, low lifecycle cost, and keen focus on passenger experience, and we are honoured to be building these modern trains for the commuters in Delhi NCR, further promoting the transition towards sustainable mass mobility solutions” Loison further added.

Metropolis Trains: Cutting-Edge Design and Performance

The Metropolis trains offer a unique design and a wide range of configurations, ensuring the highest performance through a perfect blend of proven components and innovations. Designed for a safe speed of 95 kmph and operational speed of 85 kmph, these trains boast GOA 4 driverless features, making them an environmentally friendly and comfortable metro solution for passengers in New Delhi.

The initiation of production was marked by a commemorative ceremony attended by key figures from both the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and Alstom India. This event signifies the collaborative efforts of stakeholders in propelling forward this crucial infrastructural development initiative.

With a total project value of 312 million euros, inclusive of maintenance provisions for 13 trainsets over a span of 15 years, this venture underscores Alstom’s commitment to providing not only cutting-edge transportation solutions but also ensuring their sustained performance and reliability over an extended period.

Speaking about this milestone, Dr. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director, DMRC said, “The Delhi metro stands as the lifeline of our city, and the addition of new routes will greatly enhance connectivity in the national capital. We are glad to know that Alstom is commencing the production of Metro trains for the Delhi Metro’s fourth phase of expansion. We are sure that the new age trains will ensure a smooth and comfortable ride for the passengers.”

Design Specifications and ‘Make in India’ Initiative

Inspired by the tricolours of the Indian national flag, the saloon interior of the trains will feature a mix of saffron, white and green paint on the door pillars. Line 10’s train front will showcase a metallic gold paint, marking the first usage of this color by Alstom for a metro project in India. Alstom’s Metropolis trains have been completely designed in India under the ‘Make in India’ initiative and will be manufactured at the company’s facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. This facility stands as Alstom’s largest Urban Rolling Stock manufacturing site in India, with a strong track record of delivering major domestic and international projects.

Alstom’s involvement in the fourth phase of DMRC project not only highlights its technological prowess but also its dedication to contributing to the enhancement of urban mobility infrastructure in India. Through the delivery of state-of-the-art trainsets and comprehensive maintenance services, Alstom aims to bolster the efficiency and accessibility of public transportation in the bustling metropolis of Delhi.
