A new driverless MRS-1 Metro train set for the Mumbai Metro Rail Metropolitan Authority was flagged off by the Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth on July 15 at BEML’s Bengaluru plant.

This is the 55th trainset to be supplied to the Mumbai Metro Rail Metropolitan Authority for its operations on Line 2 and Line 7, officials revealed.

BEML announced that it secured a major order, worth approximately Rs 4,319 crore, amid intense global competition. The contract involves the design, manufacture, supply, testing, commissioning, and training for 96 standard gauge Metro trainsets, each consisting of six cars.

Prioritising passenger comfort, safety

BEML has emphasised that its Metro trains are engineered to prioritise passenger comfort, safety, and energy efficiency, adhering to rigorous global standards. The 6-car trainsets have a capacity to accommodate 2,306 passengers, including seating for 298 passengers.

“Initially, the order was for 378 cars, with subsequent orders for an additional 126 and 72 cars placed by the DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation). Together, this order for 576 Metro cars, valued at approximately Rs 4,319 crore, is the single largest Metro rolling stock order received by any Metro manufacturer to date in India,” a statement by BEML read.
