The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) witnessed an unprecedented surge of seven lakh additional passenger journeys as Delhiites opted for the metro to navigate the waterlogged city on Friday. On June 28, the national capital recorded the rainiest June day in 88 years.
Despite heavy downpours that brought the national capital to a near standstill, the DMRC reported a total of 69,36,425 passenger journeys, up from 62,58,072 journeys recorded the previous day. Additionally, DMRC maintained punctuality of 99.95 per cent despite heavy rains.
DMRC maintains 99% punctuality amid downpour
Anuj Dayal, the principal executive director of corporate communications at DMRC, highlighted that despite minor waterlogging issues outside stations and entry/exit points, the metro operated with exceptional punctuality exceeding 99 percent throughout the day.
Dayal emphasised that journey or line utilisation is measured based on the number of corridors passengers use to reach their destinations.
The DMRC recorded the highest number of passenger journeys 71.09 lakh on February 13, 2024.
Record breaking rainfall in Delhi
The city recorded staggering rainfall amounts according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data: 228.1 mm at Safdarjung, 192.8 mm at Lodhi Road, 150.4 mm at Ridge, 106.6 mm at Palam, and 66.3 mm at Ayanagar over the past 20 to 30 hours.
The 228.1 mm recorded at Safdarjung in the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Friday marks more than three times the average June rainfall of 74.1 mm and stands as the highest for the month since 1936.
