The world of cricket and sports saw a top-deck reshuffle on Monday, with Sanjog Gupta, CEO, sports and live experiences at JioStar, taking over as the chief executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC) with immediate effect, the body said in an official communique.

Replacing Gupta at JioStar will be Ishan Chatterjee, currently chief business officer, sports revenue, SMB and creator monetisation, who will head the merged entity’s sports business across TV and digital, the company said.

Chatterjee will be designated as chief executive, sports, at JioStar and will be reporting to Kiran Mani, who is CEO, digital at JioStar. Chatterjee will also work directly with JioStar’s vice-chairman Uday Shankar on strategic priorities, including sports transformation and stakeholder relationships, executives in the know said.

In an internal mail to employees on Monday, Shankar called Gupta a “man for all seasons”. “Sanjog has literally grown up with me over the last two decades. He has been one of the most talented, creative, entrepreneurial and trusted colleagues and friends. As much as I am saddened, his new role as CEO of ICC is an important one as cricket needs to be reset for the next leap globally,” he said.

While Gupta’s elevation — he is the seventh CEO of ICC – will be a rare instance of an Indian executive taking over the reins at the top cricket body, which has had foreign heads in the past, it will come when long-form cricket, mainly one-day internationals, are losing steam to T20 cricket.

“It is a privilege to have this opportunity, especially at a time when cricket is poised for unprecedented growth,” Gupta said in the statement issued by the ICC. “Cricket’s inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the rapid acceleration of technology adoption could act as force multipliers for the movement,” he added.

Chatterjee, on the other hand, has his task cut out, executives said, as his expanded role will include end-to-end oversight of the sports vertical, including strategy, rights acquisition, revenue, partnerships, and viewer experience across both JioHotstar and Star Sports.

A former YouTube India MD, who joined JioStar in 2024, Chatterjee will have responsibility for both monetisation and ad innovation across key sports properties whose media rights are currently owned by JioStar. This includes IPL, ICC events, BCCI matches, Wimbledon among other events.

With over 20 years of experience across business and revenue roles, 13 years of which were at Google, Chatterjee has the expertise in scaling up digital platforms and driving strategic growth, media executives said. Besides JioStar and Google, Chatterjee has spent time in McKinsey and Unilever, where he honed his skills in strategic thinking, leadership and business fundamentals.

JioStar has invested over Rs 4,000 crore into digital technology to maintain its lead as a sports media powerhouse, executives said, with a focus on data, measurement, and platform-led monetisation. At JioStar, Chatterjee has already overseen a number of initiatives during IPL 2025, including third-party audience measurement via Nielsen, AI-led audience segmentation and engagement, advertiser packages tailored for SMEs and regional markets and creative ad formats.
