After a wage hike for its permanent workers in September, Maruti Suzuki has also revised the wages for its temporary and contractual employees. The monthly salary of temporary workers has been raised by 10% from Rs 15,273 to Rs 16,822, while that of skilled contractual workers has been raised by 6% from Rs 15,180 to Rs 16,075, according to company sources.
“Following the wage settlement with regular employees, the wages of temporary workers of the company has been revised. The increase is 10% on an average,” a company spokesperson said in response to an FE query. The increase is effective from April 2015 and arrears have been paid to the temporary workmen alongwith in the last month salary, the spokesperson added.
There are around 2,800 temporary and 3,200 contractual workers at the three plants of Maruti Suzuki. The wage revision for these category of workers is done every year, compared to a once-in-three-year for the regular workers.
On September 25, Maruti Suzuki signed a wage agreement with its permanent workers at the Gurgaon and Manesar plants, under which employees will get an average salary hike of around Rs 16,800 per month spread over the next three years.
Following the agreement for regular workers, some temporary workers at the company’s Manesar plant had staged a protest demanding they too be given a hike. Production though was not impacted by the protest, company officials had said.
The temporary workers also get all the benefits of food and transportation as permanent workers but are hired for a period of only seven months.
