Thailand reports Anthrax outbreak after rare death, issues health advisory for Indian travellers

Thailand is one of the most popular tourist destination among Indian travellers. The reason for its popularity varies from affordability, ease of visa application, and diverse tourist attractions. The island country has recently issued a health warning after witnessing an anthrax death for the first time in over 30 years. The disease took the life of a 53-year-old man who was staying in Mukdahan Province.

Another indiviual aged 53, who has had contact with cattle as per reports, has tested positive and is presently hospitalised in the same area.

Anthrax is a disease which is contracted through the spores of bacteria that can be found in soil, and it mainly affects domesticated and wild animals, it not restricted to animals and can also be fatal for human beings. The symptoms for the disease comprise of lesions or blisters on the skin along with swollen lymph nodes, the symptomps are not limited and can also vary. Medical professionals have advised to avoid the consumption of raw meat which is prevalent in some parts of India.

In response to the anthrax issue, local authorities are tracking a group of 638 people, termed as the ‘risk group’, which includes butchers but is not limited them. The group also has raw meat consumers in it. Furthermore, these individuals are being placed on prophylactic antibiotic treatment for supposed safety reasons.

Online Digital Arrival Card

Thailand has implemented a mandatory online Digital Arrival Card for all foreign visitors arriving by air, land, or sea. Accessible via the Thai Immigration Bureau’s website, this initiative aims to strengthen traveler surveillance against human trafficking and illegal activities. Travelers who fail to complete the form may face entry denial or delays.

Travel Advisory for Indian Travellers

In line with recent health developments, it is recommended that Indian nationals travel to Thailand:

  • They should avoid consuming raw as well as undercooked meat (and stay clear of northeast Thailand)
  • Should steer clear of casual contact with livestock and animal-produced products
  • They should monitor their health for any signs like lesions on the skin emerging or swollen lymph nodes and seek medical attention if requisite.
  • Make sure that the Digital Arrival Card has been filled in before setting off to Thailand.
