According to researchers, coughing followed by a respiratory illness is common which usually subsides within eight weeks.

As per findings from the University of British Columbia team in Canada, coughs persisting beyond eight weeks necessitate further evaluation.

Dr. Kevin Liang, a family physician and clinical instructor at the University’s Department of Family Practice, emphasized the importance of reassuring patients that post-infectious cough is temporary and tends to resolve on its own. This approach can help minimize unnecessary and costly prescriptions like asthma inhalers or antibiotics.

Liang pointed out that the majority of post-infectious cough symptoms tend to ease without the need for medication.

In an article featured in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the researchers outlined that post-infectious coughs are prevalent, impacting approximately 11% to 25% of adults following a respiratory infection, with a potential duration of up to eight weeks.

Diagnosis entails confirming a preceding respiratory infection and ruling out other conditions that mimic post-infectious coughs, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Additionally, clinicians must be vigilant for red flags such as difficulty swallowing, severe shortness of breath, and coughing up blood, which may necessitate further investigation.

Red flags also encompass a history of recurrent pneumonia or prolonged smoking. Coughs persisting beyond eight weeks warrant further assessment, as highlighted by the researchers. The team also emphasized that “there is no compelling evidence for a medication that effectively halts post-infectious cough.”

Research indicates minimal efficacy of inhalers or oral medications in treating coughs. Moreover, these medications can incur significant costs and lead to unwanted side effects.

The researchers stressed the critical importance of patient reassurance and education. They recommended that clinicians advise patients to schedule a follow-up appointment for additional investigation if their cough persists beyond eight weeks or if new symptoms arise.
