With insights from a press release from the European Commission, it is conducting risk assessments and considering export controls on “critical technology areas.” This is also expected to include artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor technologies, stated Cointelegraph.

Sources revealed that on October 3, 2023,  European Union officials mentioned that they have identified four areas that need assessment regarding technology risk and risk of technology leakage. The areas are believed to include AI, advanced semiconductor technologies, quantum technologies and biotechnologies.

“We need to continuously monitor our critical technologies, assess our risk exposure and – as and when necessary – take measures to preserve our strategic interests and our security. Europe is adapting to the new geopolitical realities, putting an end to the era of naivety and acting as a real geopolitical power, ” Thierry Breton, commissioner, internal market,  European Union, explained.

According to Cointelegraph, the risk assessments will be carried out by the end of the year. Furthermore, the results or initiatives based on the risk assessments will be presented by spring 2024.
