The Indian Air Force (IAF) will display its air power and precision at this year’s Republic Day celebrations with 40 aircraft taking part in the grand fly-past over the capital. The fleet will comprise a mix of 22 fighter jets, 11 transport aircraft, and seven helicopters, set to soar through Delhi’s skies in 12 intricate formations. These aircraft, hailing from 10 different air bases across the country, will highlight the IAF’s readiness and advanced capabilities.

A Spectacular Start: The Flag Formation

The aerial parade will begin with the Flag Formation, featuring four Mi-17 helicopters carrying the Indian national flag, along with the flags representing the three branches of the Indian Armed Forces. This symbolic opening sets the tone for a display of India’s military prowess.

Precision and Power: The Fighter Jets

Among the most thrilling segments will be the fly-past of India’s most advanced fighter aircraft. The formation includes:

Three MiG-29s in Katar Formation

Five Jaguar aircraft in Amrit Formation

Six Rafale jets performing the Vajrang Formation, which will surely captivate the VVIPs and the thousands of spectators present.

Three Sukhoi-30s will be featured in the Trishul Formation, showcasing the fighter’s deadly maneuverability.

• Two additional Sukhois will be accompanied by the Netra, a cutting-edge reconnaissance aircraft.

These formations not only reflect the precision of IAF pilots but also serve as a testament to the force’s modern capabilities, such as the combat-ready Rafale and Sukhoi fighters.

The New Faces: C-295 and Dornier Aircraft

For the first time, two C-295 transport aircraft, part of India’s Make in India initiative, will join the fly-past. Along with these, three Dornier aircraft of the Indian Coast Guard will be seen in the Rakshak Formation, a tribute to the nation’s maritime defense. Additional Dornier aircraft, along with an AN-32, will fly in the Sutlej Formation.

Additionally, the C-17 Globemaster, India’s largest military transport aircraft, will participate, demonstrating the IAF’s strategic airlift capabilities.

The Grand Finale: Rafale and Vertical-Charlie

The spectacular fly-past will culminate in the Vijay Formation and a breathtaking Vertical-Charlie maneuver by the Rafale fighter jets, showcasing the acrobatics and precision flying that define the Indian Air Force.

Marching with Pride

In a fitting tribute, 144 air warriors will march in the Republic Day parade, led by Squadron Leader Mahendra Singh. Among the marchers, Flight Lieutenant Damini Deshmukh, Flight Lieutenant Nepo Moiranthem, and Flying Officer Abhinav Ghosh will serve as supernumerary officers. In addition, a band of 72 Air Force musicians will march to the iconic Sound Barrier tune, further elevating the grandeur of the day.

Notable Absences

While the air display will undoubtedly be impressive, certain aircraft will be absent. The indigenous LCA Tejas has been excluded from this year’s fly-past due to its single-engine configuration. Additionally, the ALH Dhruv helicopter, which was involved in a recent crash in Porbandar, has been grounded for safety reasons. The helicopter will only return to the skies once the cause of the accident is thoroughly investigated.

This year’s Republic Day fly-past promises to be a captivating spectacle of India’s military strength and technical prowess, highlighting the advanced capabilities of the Air Force while honoring its rich legacy. With formations flying in perfect precision, the event serves as a reminder of India’s commitment to defending its skies and maintaining peace in the region.
