On December 4, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Maharashtra, specifically Sindhudurg. At 4:15 PM, he will unveil the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Rajkot Fort. This event coincides with the celebration of Navy Day 2023.

In an official statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, the Prime Minister will attend Navy Day celebrations at Sindhudurg, paying homage to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s maritime legacy. The celebration is significant, as it recognizes the historical ties between Shivaji Maharaj and the Indian Navy, evident in the Naval Ensign inspired by his seal.

The Navy Day festivities involve ‘Operational Demonstrations’ showcasing the prowess of the Indian Navy’s ships, submarines, aircraft, and special forces at Tarkarli beach, Sindhudurg. This tradition, observed annually on December 4, offers citizens a glimpse into the multifaceted operations conducted by the Navy, emphasizing its role in national security.

This year’s Operational Demonstration, hosted by Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, promises a grand display. Scheduled at Sindhudurg Fort, built in 1660 under Shivaji Maharaj’s patronage, the event features 20 warships and 40 aircraft, including iconic models like the MiG 29K and LCA Navy.

Notably, Navy Day holds historical significance, commemorating “Operation Trident,” a pivotal 1971 War attack on Karachi harbour. The ‘Op Demo’ serves to honour personnel who exhibited bravery in challenging situations, offering the public a live telecast of advanced naval assets.

The spectacle includes combat beach reconnaissance, assault demonstrations by Marine Commandos, Naval Band performances, and a captivating laser show at Sindhudurg Fort. This marks a departure from tradition, as it’s the first time the Navy organizes such a mega event away from a major naval station.

Strategically located, Sindhudurg Fort, 550 kilometers from Mumbai and 135 kilometers from Goa’s naval base, was chosen collaboratively to ensure seamless execution. Beyond the celebration, Navy Day aims to raise public awareness about maritime significance, emphasizing the Navy’s crucial role in national security.

Last year’s celebrations in Visakhapatnam and this year’s move to the west coast underline the Navy’s commitment to showcasing its capabilities across diverse locations. The choice of Sindhudurg Fort not only aligns with operational needs but also honours its rich maritime history dating back to the 1660s.
