Eid-ul-Ad’ha (Bakrid) and Bakri ID (Id-Uz-Zuha) are two bank holidays as per the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday calendar for public-sector banks (PSBs) and private banking lenders. Banks in many parts of the country will remain shut on account of these two festivals. Banks will either be closed on June 6 or June 7. Customers should also note that banks across India will remain closed on June 8, 2025, as it falls on a Sunday, which is a regular weekly holiday for all public and private sector banks.
Bank holidays in India differ from state to state and are based on national, regional, and religious observances.
RBI classifies holidays into three categories: Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday, Banks’ Closing of Accounts Holiday, and Holidays Under the Negotiable Instruments Act. Banks remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month.
As per the RBI’s holiday calendar, banks in different states across India will be closed for 12 days in June 2025. This includes regular weekly offs like Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays, along with public and regional holidays observed under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
Bank holiday on June 6
On June 6, on account of Eid-ul-Ad’ha, banks will remain shut in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. Eid-ul-Ad’ha is an Islamic festival. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Ishmael, as an act of obedience to God. According to Islamic tradition, just as Ibrahim was about to carry out the sacrifice, Allah replaced Ishmael with a lamb, sparing his life.
Bank holiday on June 7
On Saturday, June 7, banks across most parts of the country will be closed for Bakri Id (Id-Uz-Zuha), except in Ahmedabad, Gangtok, Itanagar, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram, where they will remain open. Since June 7 is the first Saturday of the month, banks in some states will remain open.
Online banking operational on June 6 and 7
While banks will remain shut on either of these two dates in certain states, online banking services will remain accessible across the country, offering customers a convenient way to manage their finances. These services allow users to carry out personal transactions without visiting a branch.
Customers can initiate money transfers through UPI, demand draft request forms, chequebook request forms, and NEFT/RTGS transfer forms. Card-related services, including those for ATM, debit, and credit cards, will also be available. Additionally, services like account maintenance, setting up standing instructions, and locker applications can be accessed on these holidays.
