Thick fog conditions in the national capital have disrupted the flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport today.
Amid the severe fog conditions, the Delhi airport has issued an advisory for flyers, requesting them to contact airlines before traveling. “Due to dense fog, flight operations at Delhi Airport may be affected. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information,” Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) mentioned on ‘X’.
The Airport Authority further mentioned that while landing and takeoffs continue at Delhi Airport, flights that are not CAT III compliant may get affected.
As per IMD, Delhi’s Palam & Safdarjung recorded visibility at 0 on Sunday and Ridge & Aya Nagar area at 25 each. On Monday (today), the national capital woke up to a densely foggy morning, with the minimum temperature being 4 degrees Celsius in the RK Puram area.
Over 100 flights affected due to low visibility
On Sunday morning, a total of 10 flights were diverted, nearly 100 were delayed, and some were even canceled at the Delhi airport due to low visibility owing to dense fog conditions.
According to an official statement from IndiGo Airlines, “Due to the low visibility and dense fog conditions across North India, IndiGo flight operations were impacted on January 14, 2024. This had a cascading effect on our operations throughout the day. Our staff kept passengers apprised of all delays and cancellations across airports and made every possible effort to facilitate the passengers. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers.”
An official said a total of 10 flights, including 2 international flights, were diverted to Jaipur between 4.30 am and 12 noon.
Nearly 100 flights, including overseas services, were delayed, and some of the flights canceled due to the bad weather, the official said.
According to Airport officials, the visibility at the airport was almost zero during the period from 4 am to 10 am, which left the flight operations disrupted in the wee hours.
