The Airports Authority of India (AAI) commenced flight calibration of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) for runway 26/08 at the under-construction Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Monday (August 12).

This process is a key step towards ensuring the airport’s readiness for its anticipated first phase of operations by March 2025.

The two-day calibration exercise, which will conclude on August 13 (Tuesday), is vital for fine-tuning flight paths and preparing the airport for operational licensing.

According to a Facebook post by Navi Mumbai Airport, this event is essential for establishing the instrument approach procedures and ensuring the airport’s functionality.

What is Instrument Landing System?

The ILS, a standard precision landing aid certified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), provides accurate vertical and lateral guidance to aircraft, enabling safe landings under both normal and adverse weather conditions.

This system directs aircraft to a position from which a safe runway landing can be executed.
