An IndiGo flight from Varanasi to the national capital received a bomb threat on Saturday (June 2), prompting all passengers to safely disembark after landing at Delhi airport. However, police determined the threat to be a hoax following a thorough inspection.

According to a Delhi Police officer, a female caller informed the security staff of Delhi airport operator DIAL at around 5:38 PM and said that her husband, traveling from Varanasi to Delhi on an IndiGo flight, was carrying a bomb in his handbag.

“Accordingly, following standard security protocol, a thorough inspection was conducted and nothing suspicious was found,” the officer said.

The passenger in question, Vimal Kumar, 42, a resident of Meerut, was interrogated in detail. Kumar explained that his wife, who is ‘mentally unfit,’ made the call after seeing a news report about a bomb in an aircraft four days earlier. Police are verifying his claims, and further legal action is underway.

IndiGo confirms bomb threat

In a statement, IndiGo confirmed that flight 6E 2232, operating from Varanasi to Delhi, had received a bomb threat.

“Upon landing in Delhi, the aircraft was taken to an isolation bay as per security agency guidelines and the crew followed all standard operating procedures,” it said. All passengers have safely disembarked, and the aircraft is currently undergoing inspection.

This is the second incident on the same day. Earlier, a IndiGo Mumbai-Chennai flight also made an emergency landing after receiving a bomb threat which was later termed a hoax.
