Indian Transport Ministry urges vehicle owners, DL holders to update mobile number on Vahan, Sarathi portals: Here’s how

Vehicle owners and driving licence (DL) holders across India are being strongly advised by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to proactively update their mobile numbers on the official Vahan and Sarathi portals. This simple step is hailed as a critical step to avoid disruptions in accessing vital online services and receiving important government notifications.

The move comes after it was found that most owners and DL holders fail to update their phone numbers as they change their SIM cards or have to move to a new state. As a result, many registered mobile numbers on these platforms are outdated — sometimes years old and no longer in use — thus causing widespread issues like failed OTP verifications, missed alerts for renewals, fines, challans or policy changes, and delays in processing applications.

How to quickly update your phone on Vahan, Sarathi

Updating on Vahan (for vehicles):

1. Visit vahan.parivahan.gov.in
2. Click on “Update Mobile Number”
3. Enter your vehicle registration number and last 5 digits of the chassis number
4. Provide your new mobile number
5. Verify with the OTP sent to the new number
6. Submit and download the acknowledgement

Updating on Sarathi (for driving licences):

1. Go to sarathi.parivahan.gov.in
2. Select your state and the relevant service
3. Enter your licence number and date of birth
4. Input the new mobile number
5. Complete OTP verification
6. Submit and save the confirmation receipt
