The first leg of the 2018 Mahindra BAJA SAEINDIA 2018 has concluded yesterday at Pithampur in Indore. In the event, a total of 86 teams participated in mBAJA 46 completed the endurance race. On the other hand, 7 out of 25 eBAJA teams completed the said round. During the 2018 BAJA event, Smt. Kashibai Navale College of Engineering from Pune has been declared as the Best eBAJA Team while D.Y. Patil College of Engineering from the same city received the title of the Best mBAJA Team. The endurance race was flagged off by Dr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Babul Supriyo, Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises. This is for the first time that the main BAJA event is scheduled for two different locations. While the Pithampur edition has concluded with the endurance race, another edition will take place at IIT Ropar in March 2018. For the 11th edition of BAJA, 388 teams had registered out of which 221 teams qualified for the finale. Out of these, 112 made their way to the Endurance round after passing multiple stages.
DY Patil College of Engineering, Akurdi from Pune bagged the title for mBAJA 2018 while College of Engineering from Pune and Institute of Technology, Nirma University from Ahmedabad stood as first and second runner ups respectively. Talking of eBAJA, Kashibai Navale College of Engineering from Pune got the title while an all-women team of Shri Vishnu Engineering College for Women from Andhra Pradesh were the first runner up. Besides the best BAJA teams, there were also some other awards that were given on the basis of some specific parameters. Marathwada Mitra Mandal’s College Of Engineering from Pune and Smt. Kashibai Navale College of Engineering, Pune (mBAJA) received the Engineering Design award whereas Dr D.Y Patil Institute of Technology, Pimpri from Pune got the Go Green Emissions Award. Prizes worth total of Rs 22.40 lakh were presented during BAJA SAEINDIA 2018 in Pithampur.
The four-day BAJA 2018 event commenced with basic Static Evaluation round that included design evaluation, cost evaluation and marketing presentation. In the final round, the teams displayed their prototype of a rugged single seat, off-road four-wheeled vehicle and were evaluated on various parameters like engineering design, CAE, cost and technology innovation. All teams were given the freedom to design their own transmissions and the only restriction was the 60kmph speed limit. In the Dynamic Evaluation Round, there were various tests for acceleration, sled pull, manoeuvrability and suspension & traction. In the last, the Durability Evaluation Round saw the vehicles undergoing endurance tests of one hour for eBAJA and four hours of mBAJA. The 2nd leg of 11th edition of BAJA SAEINDIA 2018 is scheduled at IIT Ropar, Punjab from 8th to 11th March 2018.

For those not in the know, BAJA offers an open platorm for mechanical students of various engineering colleges to come forward and showcase their talent. Over 1000 students take part in the engineering extravaganza every year and the last two years have seen the introduction of a new category called the eBAJA. In the event, the students can participate in teams and have to build their own ATVs (All terrain vehicles) following some specific guidelines. After that, the teams have to pass certain stages that test the vehicle on various parameters. The last stage is the endurance round in which the participants have to run their vehicle on a challenging track.
