Nestle India, trying to wriggle out of a fresh controversy surrounding Cerelac, has said it was investigating the complaint of live beetles found in a pack of the baby milk food supplement produced by it. It added that it was fully cooperating with authorities on the matter.

“We are aware that a consumer in Coimbatore has reported finding insects in a pack of our Cerelac Stage 3 Infant Cereal. The quality and safety of our products are non-negotiable priorities for our company and we always take such reports seriously. We have made every effort to investigate this complaint and are cooperating fully with the authorities in this matte,” Nestle India told FE in an e-mailed response.

Nestle said its manufacturing technology excludes the possibility of insects in the sealed package, in which this product is sold. “We have visited the consumer and shared with him details of our strict food quality and safety procedures, including quality checks at the different stages of our manufacturing process, as well as checks of storage conditions. We believe the consumer was satisfied with the resolution of his complaint,” the company said.

On Tuesday, a software professional had lodged a formal complaint with the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department of Tamil Nadu in Coimbatore after he reportedly found live worms in Cerelac, which he bought for his one-year-old son on Sunday. “The sample was seized and sent to a government testing laboratory,” said sources in the food safety department in Coimbatore.
