The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (Unido) would carry out an exhaustive mapping of industrial clusters in the country to formulate a clear strategy for the transfer of green technology to small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The ministry of commerce has asked Unido to complete the mapping exercise within two years. ?At present there is no central repository of data on industrial clusters in the country. The mapping exercise would help both the Centre as well as international agencies in identifying core areas for green technology transfer,? Dmitri I Piskounov, managing director, programme development and technical cooperation division of Unido told FE.

Piskounov said that cluster mapping would not be confined to only identifying the types and number of industrial units in a cluster. ?Our focus would be to gather data on impact of the technology being used at SMEs and also the nature of technology transfer needed for a particular cluster,? Dmitri said.

Unido would be inking a formal agreement with the department of industrial policy and promotion (DPIP) under the ministry of commerce for a $32 million programme during 2007-2017, focusing on transfer of green technology to SMEs.

Under the new agreement with the government, Unido would focus mainly on bringing in more cleaner and advance technologies in the areas of treatment and recycling of water, adoption of energy efficient equipments & new wastage disposal technique. ?Cluster mapping would help us in identifying areas for green technology transfer,? Piskounov said. Unido would also collaborate with Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) & ministry for small scale industries for carrying out the cluster mapping.

Unido has been supporting the small and medium industries in the country since 1967and has provided assistance to SMEs, to the tune of $112 million.
