On trade with China, we miss an important issue: the undervalued yuan (?The way beyond?, Jan 16). It helps China to compete on the price front, selling its goods relatively cheaper. Had the Chinese currency been valued properly, Indian goods would have found better deals. Before we make any big trade concession to China, we should talk about the issue of valuing the currency. Don?t let China capture our market through the back door.

Esop extension
It is heartening that SBI is offering equity rights at a 35% discount to its existing shareholders and employees (?Fact and fable?, Jan 17). However, if the bank extends the scheme to employees of its six subsidiaries as well, then it is likely that they would root for a merger with SBI as they may receive its bumper-bonus and third retirement benefits, from which they are presently excluded. Also, it is highly reasonable to offer this Esop scheme to employees of other nationalised banks that have undertaken due diligence for their impending merger with SBI in the current year.

Divisive tricks
No sooner was the issue of state reorganisation broached than the Congress beat a hasty retreat (?Cong junks idea of second SRC?, Jan 17). For the party to reclaim its lost base in UP, it should do a frank reality check rather than opting for potentially divisive gambles.
