Tata Elxsi Ltd, a leading embedded product design and engineering company, shared its plans to aggressively pursue projects in the automotive and aerospace sectors this fiscal.

Tata Elxsi?s development center in Thiruvananthapuram focuses on supporting automotive and aerospace customers for high-reliability and mission critical embedded software, hardware and systems, helping them reduce time to market and cost of product development.

Tata Elxsi expanded its Thiruvananthapuram development centre last year to meet the scale-up requirements of its clients in these industries.

With electronics, electronic design services, software and production activities shifting to low-cost countries, India is expected to emerge as a major player in the automotive industry.

The Thiruvanathapuram center works on advanced automotive technologies including Hybrid and Electric Hybrid vehicles, setting up virtual test environment and executing virtual tests, designing ECUs for various applications including AUTOSAR compliance, and deploying Model based design strategies for developing production code.

Increasing complexity of software in the automotive electronics sector has made it mandatory for OEMs to shift to more flexible and re-usable software architectures. AUTOSAR is rapidly gaining popularity as the standard software architecture for automotive software. Tata Elxsi joined the Flexray consortium in 2005 and the AUTOSAR consortium in the year 2006. As a premium member, Tata Elxsi actively participates in Body Electronics and Specification validation activities for the AUTOSAR consortium, and has also partnered with multiple customers to execute AUTOSAR projects and develop solutions for next-generation automotive electronics.

?The oil crisis and the current recession have increased focus on fuel efficiency and hybrid technologies. Customers in the west as well as in emerging markets such as India and China are turning to smaller, more fuel efficient cars. We are currently engaged with numerous vendors who are working to realize the dream of viable hybrid cars by the end of 2010. We are offering prototyping and production stage support to our customers globally and are actively engaged with Automotive OEMs and Tier 1s in their Hybrid Electric Programs. Our understanding of challenges and emerging technologies in this area, and premium membership with consortiums such as AUTOSAR has yielded positive results for us,? said Mr. R Natarajan, VP ?Automotive and Aerospace practice, Tata Elxsi.

Tata Elxsi is also partnering in the development of Diesel Engine Management System (DEMS) for a luxury car manufacturer in Europe. The scope covers full responsibility and project management for DEMS-ECU development, Diagnostics and Vehicle calibration for the EURO 5 emission and European Onboard Diagnosis (EOBD) standards. This has also involved validation of software functions developed by Tier 1 system suppliers, and represents a first for Tata Elxsi in terms of the scale of responsibility undertaken in these advanced areas.

Speaking about the avionics and aerospace domain focus, Mr. Natarajan further added, ?We have recently bagged a project in technology intensive Aerospace and defense domain from a European Tier 1 aerospace supplier. We began our engagement with a pilot activity and the project team has delivered beyond the customer’s expectations. This resulted in Tata Elxsi being engaged in the full development program.?

Leveraging its core avionics domain expertise and strong partnerships with aerospace OEMs and equipment manufacturers, Tata Elxsi offers engineering, product development and testing services for systems and subsystems in the aerospace industry.
