The tool-down strike at Mahindra & Mahindra?s (M&M) engine and transmission plant at Igatpuri entered the ninth day on Friday.

The losses incurred by the plant in this process is estimated to be around R162 crore. The total production loss is around 10,000 engines. A meeting between the two suspended workmen and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday evening also failed to bring about truce. The workers are demanding that the two suspended workers be reinstated.

?The Sena chief spoke to the two workmen about taking back their fight, but one of them was adamant,? said a union source. He added that the workmen are waiting to hear from the chief on his meeting with Anand Mahindra, CMD, M&M.

An M&M spokesperson declined to comment.

Sources in the union told FE that top M&M management and representatives from Shiv Sena are expected to reach Igatpuri on Sunday to discuss the matter.

The Igatpuri union has been asking for reinstatement of two workmen, including their leader Sunil Yadav, president of Bharatiya Kamgar Sangh, affiliated to Shiv Sena, who were suspended by the management on disciplinary ground on April 9 following a strife between the two workmen.

The Igatpuri plant employees a total of 1,500 workmen including ones on contract. The plant has a daily capacity of 1,100 units and produces engines for popular models such as Scorpio, Xylo, Bolero, and pick-ups, among others.
