Canon has expanded its Pixma range of devices with the Pixma MG5270?a multi-function inkjet printer. Combining printer, copier and scanner in one device, Canon has given its users a sturdy performer for home and office use. The all-in-one is compact in dimensions and weighs only 8 kg. It comes with a glossy black finish and boasts of multiple trays, that is, a bottom cassette for plain paper and a rear tray for photos. The printer uses five separate cartridges which ensures that if one cartridge is running low, the printer does not stop working. For users who require heavy printing, a new replacement cartridge costs Rs 725.
Pixma MG5270 features Wi-Fi as well as Ethernet network connectivity which is easy to setup. The overall setting up including fixing the cartridges is very simple. There is an operating panel too, placed adjacent to the scanner and copier lid, with a 2.4-inch TFT LCD display showing instant print, scan and copy options allowing users to operate from the panel itself if a document or an image is made available via a USB or memory card. The card reader panel has a cover to avoid dust accumulation and accepts SD and MS Pro Duo cards. There is a USB slot right under the card panel for direct USB printing and the device also supports PictBridge. We liked the operating panel as its big buttons made it easy to use and reduced the time required to do the job.
In terms of performance, Pixma MG 5270 impressed with its print quality. On a glossy sheet, a borderless photo on high quality gave us an excellent print with natural colours, sharp details and no ink spread. A 4×6 card size colour print took around 33 seconds to print after the command was given. An A4 plain paper borderless print out of text and photo document took 19 seconds. The text quality doesn?t spill and looked intact, even the smallest font of 8 in our document was clear and sharp.
The copy function takes around 10 seconds to roll out the first black and white copy and 15 seconds for first colour copy including warmup. For an A4 size colour photo copy, the device took just 20 seconds. In our benchmarks, the average copy speed came to 9 ppm in black and white and 5 ppm in colour with text, whereas for a colour photo it was 3 ppm. Multiple page copy involving 50 sheets took 5 minutes and 33 seconds to print out? an excellent speed for an inkjet device.
The scanning speed is around 40 seconds for colour and 24 seconds for black and white at a resolution of 2400×4800 dpi. The device is compatible with Windows 7 and Mac. One major issue with Canon Pixma MG5270 is that the paper sheets jammed inside when we gave a bulk print commend.
Probably this is because the printer tries to maintain fast print speeds, which in turn leads to paper getting jammed. Despite this handicap, at a price of Rs 9,955, this all-in-one device is a good buy for homes with heavy printing needs and SMB.
