The Planning Commission will hold a meeting with senior power ministry officials on Friday to decide power generation and capacity addition targets for 2013-14.
Sources said BK Chaturvedi, member (energy), Planning Commission, will finalise the targets on the basis of feedback from the power ministry.
Coal supply issues for power projects commissioned during the previous fiscal is also expected to come up for review at the meeting.
The capacity addition target for the previous fiscal (2012-13) was set at 17,956 MW. Against that, the actual capacity addition is estimated at 20,600 MW. However, there was a marginal shortfall in electricity generation target.
Only 911 billion units of electricity could be generated during the year against the target of 913 billion units, sources said.
Of the total capacity addition target set for the 2012-13, 15,956 MW was based on conventional energy sources like coal, lignite, natural gas and hydro. The balance was nuclear energy.
As much as 16,407-MW capacity, based on conventional energy sources, was added till March 17. The private sector made the highest contribution with 9,103-MW capacity, followed by the central and state sector with 4,397 MW and 2,907 MW, respectively.
At the individual level, Tata Power led the pack by adding a record 3,200-MW capacity at its Mundra ultra mega power project.
It was followed closely by NTPC with a contribution of 3,160 MW.
The Planning Commission has set the power generation target for the 12th Five-year Plan at 88,000 MW.
The private sector is expected to contribute as much as 52% to the government’s capacity addition programme for the current Plan, up from 42% in the previous Plan.
