The Winter Session is almost over, but the heat is already on. After 20 days of blocking Parliament proceedings over their demand for a joint parliamentary committee probe into the 2G spectrum scandal, the Opposition parties are set to take out rallies and ‘educate’ voters on the largest corruption scandal in India.
On Monday, when the Winter Session comes to a close, the BJP has planned to hold protests within Parliament, to be followed by an all-opposition rally at Delhi’s Ram Lila Maidan on December 22. ?We will continue with our demands even after the session ends,? said Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley.
Significantly, NDA convenor Sharad Yadav and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj will be reaching out to non-NDA opposition parties to enlist them in the agitation. Sources confirm that these leaders have already reached out to the Indian National Lok Dal’s OP Chautala, the Biju Janata Dal, the Asom Gana Parishad and will be meeting Left party leaders too. ?The only apprehension is that with the 2G probe encompassing 2001 policy under NDA, the government will use every means possible to break opposition unity on this, especially seeking to break the Left from us,? said a senior BJP leader.
In the meantime, all BJP-NDA MPs have been directed to visit their constituencies and ?educate? their voters on the nature of the scam and the reasons why Parliament suffered its longest-ever lockdown.
?A note will be prepared and circulated to all NDA MPs and they have been asked to hold meetings in their areas to take their case to the people,? said Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj.
The government said senior managers, has decided to use the inter-session period to come up with what they term ?demonstrable action? on the case, and does not rule out even the prospect of Raja’s arrest. ?It will depend on what the probe unearths,? said a senior floor manager for the government. ?The object is to take demonstrable action so as to make the need for a JPC moot by the time the budget session rolls by,? he added.
