The central sector company, National Hydro Power Corp (NHPC), is planning to set up two mega hydro power stations in Orissa.

“We are planning to implement two hydro power stations–Sindol Complex (320mw) and Chiplima-B (200mw)–in Orissa, NHPC chairman SK Garg said.

The state-owned Orissa Hydro Power Corp (OHPC) has prepared the detailed project reports. According to an estimate at the 1998 price level, the cost of Chiplima-B and Hirakud-B was pegged at Rs 922 crore and Rs 945 crore, respectively. If the projects are implemented now, the cost would be double, sources in the energy department said.

The state government had submitted a proposal to the NHPC for setting up a mega hydro power station in collaboration with the OHPC. The state had also furnished information to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) for inclusion of the Sindol Hydro Power Complex, Chiplima-B and Hirakud-B (208mw) in the national action plan.

The NHPC chairman on Tuesday had a discussion with chief minister Naveen Patnaik regarding the projects. He also explored the possibility of the state’s hydro power potential and the projects likely to be taken up during the 11th Plan period.
