The open-source alternative Linux is gaining momentum in India. Apart from the big enterprises such as IBM, IDBI, Indiabulls and others, the low-cost Linux advantage is making it acceptable to small and medium size businesses for accessing web servers, mail servers, and other technologies. According to an industry analyst, the Linux model is observing a growth of 28-30% year-on-year and there will be a 30% growth for the next 3-5 years.

?Linux is a full fledged operating system providing all the applications (Office Suite, Browser, Graphics, Multimedia and many more) that are required by a typical user. It’s also secure, free of the virus problems plaguing Windows and best of all, comes free,? said Prakash Advani, partner manager, Central Asia, Canonical.

Experts feel that virus is not yet an issue with Linux and thus it’s a major advantage that this open-source alternative has. Piracy, which throngs the market and produces a huge challenge for the legal software market is also not a big issue with Linux.
