Intelligent cars that can avoid bad roads, converse with owners, and even sense the presence other vehicles are the innovations could change road travel in India.

Announcing the five innovations IBM India Research lab has said that next-generation transport innovations would lead to ?collaborative driving,? where cars would behave as if they had ?reflexes.? IBM said that vehicles would be able to exchange information with each other on road infrastructure and offer feedback to drivers, making for smoother and safer traffic flow.

With sophisticated voice-recognition systems, drivers would be able to use voice commands to secure real-time flight updates, read and respond to emails, play DVDs or select music, adjust cabin temperature etc, while driving.

IBM predicted that traffic lights would be adjusted real -time, based on the congestion on roads, through the use of sensor technologies. Parking would be made easier, traffic would pave way for emergency vehicles on their own and traffic jams would no more exist.

For those using public transport, GPS technology and in-vehicle communications would facilitate cell phone alerts about bus or train delays. Interestingly, commuters could then even be advised on alternative routes that are available for faster or more convenient transport. With smarter systems, air travelers would be notified about possible flight delays in advance, IBM said.

IBM India Research Lab?s director Daniel Das said, ?We believe these innovations will be available within the next few years. Some of them, such as the traffic notifications via cell phone and intelligent traffic systems using sensor technologies are already in limited use, but all of these innovations are being worked on today in IBM?s Research labs.? IBM said that the new innovations would change the dynamics of travel in the next two years.
