Seeking to turn the tables on the Opposition over charges of favouritism in allotting state housing board plots, chief minister M Karunanidhi told the Assembly that his government followed the procedures set by and practices followed by the previous AIADMK regimes.

On Monday, Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy had approached Tamil Nadu governor Surjit Singh Barnala, seeking permission to prosecute Karunanidhi for showing favouritism and flouting norms. Making a statement in the Assembly on Tuesday, the CM pointed it out to the Opposition that it was, in fact, the AIADMK government that instituted the discretionary quota system three decades ago. The first government headed by J Jayalalithaa between 1991 and 1996 hiked the quantum allotted under the quota from 10 to 15%, said Karunanidhi, spelling out the names beneficiaries, including AIADMK floor leader in Parliament Thambi Durais wife, party leader K A Sengottaiyans son, former DGP Walter Dawaram, DGP R Natraj, CRPF chief K Vijay Kumar, among others.
