Former finance secretary Ashok Chawla is set to become the new chairman of the anti-trust regulator Competition Commission of India. Government sources said the appointments committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Thursday cleared his name five months after a high-level government panel chaired by Supreme Court judge SS Nijjar proposed his name.
Since the former chairman, Dhanedra Kumar, demitted office on June 5, the commission has been virtually headless for months. ?PM has approved the appointment. The meeting took place today (Thursday) and the orders would be issued very soon,? a government source told FE. Other senior CCI officials also confirmed the development. When contacted, Chawla declined to comment.
The choice of Chawla as the second chairman of the anti-trust regulator comes with its share of controversy.
After the high-level government panel proposed his name as the chairman of the commission, it did not go down well with two of CCI?s senior members.
