Christopher Lingle likes to take a big picture view (?The Greenspan-Bernanke cycle?, January 21) of the state of the US economy, which has been on policy turbo-boost for several years now. Will the US Fed?s latest rate cut serve to pump more air into an asset bubble? Will Bush?s fiscal package work? Can fiscal and monetary measures provide anything beyond financial market stimulation? Is it just a matter of timing? These are questions that need more than just superficial analysis. In India, thankfully, we prefer to place textbook economics in a larger perspective, so are less likely to be carried away by outward appearances.

Justice done
The Mumbai court?s awarding of life sentences to 11 accused in connection with the post-Godhra riot and the Bilkis Bano rape cases is commendable. The trial was shifted to Mumbai from Ahmedabad on fears of a fair trial being thwarted. Justice denied in Gujarat, politically, is now done in Mumbai. This aspect raises questions about the rule of law in Gujarat. Further, should victims need to seek justice through recourse to fair trials outside their home state?

Harmony model
In this scenario of dissent (?Federal fracas?, Jan 19), Kerala could be a model. Its people and government are sensitive to the treatment meted out to workers from other states.
